The University System of Georgia as well as the State of Georgia approves 12 holidays per year that are recognized and taken off with pay. The University will be closed on those days. The approved holidays for calendar year 2003 are as follows:

Holiday Day Off
New Year's Day January 1st
Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday January 20th
Independence Day July 4th
Labor Day September 1st
Thanksgiving Day November 27th
Day after Thanksgiving November 28th
Christmas Eve December 24th
Christmas Day December 25th
Additional Holiday December 26th
Additional Holiday December 29th
Additional Holiday December 30th
New Years Eve December 31st

In addition, the University will be closed on Memorial Day, May 26th, 2003, December 22nd and December 23rd. Since these are additional holidays over and above the 12 allotted by the State, staff and administrators have the following options:

    1. Use eight hours of annual leave for each day.

    2. Work an additional eight hours during the reminder of the Memorial Day Week, Tuesday May 27th through Friday, May 30th.

    3. Take these days off without pay.

  • Since there will be no classes on these days, faculty will not be required to take leave or make up hours.
  • Your supervisor must approve option two for Memorial Day. Option 2 does not apply to December.
  • The University administration recognizes the importance of the Memorial Day holiday; we encourage you the use this time to recognize the supreme sacrifice that has been made by members of the armed forces on our behalf.

Please do not hesitate to contact Human Resources if you have questions.
