Public SafetyThe SACS section on Safety and Security states: 6.4.3 Safety and Security "The institution must take reasonable steps to provide a healthful, safe and secure environment for all members of the campus community." and Statement #480: "Administrative responsibility for environmental health and safety programs must be assigned. A comprehensive safety plan must be developed, implemented and evaluated regularly. The plan should give special attention to the adequate provision and use of safety equipment in laboratories and other hazardous areas; to the modification of buildings, if necessary, for easy egress in the event of fire or other emergency; and to familiarizing all building occupants with emergency evacuation procedures." Response: UWG meets these criteria. Discussion: UWG's Public Safety Division provides police services to the University. These services include patrolling the campus as well as crime investigation and prevention. Officers of the campus police force have received advanced training and are sworn law enforcement officers. The Public Safety Division works closely with the Carrollton City Police Department and the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. The University's fire protection is provided by the City of Carrollton's Fire Department. Environmental Safety Officers ensure that the University is in compliance with federal, state, and local laws concerning health and safety programs. The officers ensure a safe working and learning environment. In 2001 UWG drafted a comprehensive plan that includes safety audits (p. 23), laboratory inspections (p. 100), proper disposal of hazardous materials (pp. 23, 135), and personnel training (p. 30). The safety officers have developed evacuation plans for residence halls and several administrative buildings. These evacuation plans for all buildings were completed by May 1, 2002. Familiarization of building occupants with these plans is conducted as an ongoing process. References:
