EDUCATION:  1985, Auburn University, B.S., Political Science - Criminal Justice-Youth Services.  Sixty-five hours additional undergraduate course work in Management, Accounting, Finance, Chemistry, Toxicology and Business Law. 

 

PRESENT EMPLOYMENT:  January 2001 – Present: University West Georgia, Director Risk Management/Environmental Health & Safety.

Risk Management – Oversees all insurance claims; investigates accidental occurrences; sets proper insurance coverage on University buildings, contents, rolling and non-rolling stock; maintains vehicle and property registry; maintains proper liability coverage/indemnification; conducts active risk assessments on all buildings and grounds; manages Facilities Department’s Worker’s Compensation claims; provides waivers for activities with potential risk/liability.

 

Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator – Developed comprehensive hazardous waste management program; brings safety and environmental support to all levels within the University, including students; supervises collection and proper storage of waste, surplus chemicals and other hazardous materials generated throughout the University; evaluates a wide variety of possible fates for the collected chemicals and hazardous materials to determine appropriate options of recycling, reuse or State/Federally regulated waste disposal; prepares, signs and tracks hazardous waste shipping manifests and other waste-tracking documents, inspects and selects hazardous waste disposal firms, prepares bid documents and verifies invoices for correctness; prepares and submits all applicable EPA/Georgia EPD reports; provides safety, environmental awareness, respiratory protection, and other safety and environmental training; oversees contractor safety programs on building projects.  Designated as the University’s Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Coordinator, Asbestos Operations and Maintenance Program Manager (AHERA certified), Assistant Responsible Official and Special Permits Manager. 

 

 

PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE:  April 1988 – January 2001:  Auburn University, Office of Safety and Environmental Health.  Title:  Hazardous Materials Manager.  Duties:  Supervise collection and proper storage of waste, surplus chemicals and other hazardous materials generated at Auburn University.  Works closely with University faculty and staff at all levels.  Oversee two full-time and three part-time personnel.  Responsible for the classification of hazardous materials by governmental regulations and evaluation of waste for recycling and recovery; verify waste disposal invoices for accuracy prior to payment; track waste disposal costs per item of disposal by utilizing various computer spreadsheets; prepare all bid documents for outside contractors; operate resource recovery/recycling units for waste minimization and cost recovery; package and prepare hazardous waste for off-site disposal; train University faculty, staff and students on proper waste management procedures; generate Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports and required documents.  Interact with regulatory officials from the EPA and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) during inspections.  Serve as the Emergency Coordinator for the University.

 

September 1986 - April 1988:  Auburn University, Department of Mechanical Engineering/Materials Engineering.  Title:  Laboratory Supervisor IV.  Duties:  Operated and maintained metallurgical type optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscopes, energy dispersive systems, x-ray diffraction equipment, robotics and material testing equipment along with related data acquisition and computer analysis equipment.  Supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate students in laboratory equipment operation and procedures.

 

September 1985 - September 1986:  Auburn University, Office of Safety & Environmental Health.  Title:  Electron Microscopist/Assistant Hazardous Materials Manager.  Duties:  Analyzed air samples using transmission electron microscopy; collected and transported waste chemicals on-site; packaged hazardous waste for disposal; conducted facility inspections; inventoried waste chemicals; responded to chemical spill emergencies; input data to computerized inventory system; researched chemical hazards; served as an alternate emergency coordinator for the University.  Supervised one full-time and three part-time personnel.

 

March 1982 - September 1985:  Auburn University, Office of Safety & Environmental Health.  Title:  Laboratory Technician.  Duties:  Chemical inventory computerized data input; dosimetry recordkeeping; radiological isotope inventory computerized data input; chemical waste pickups and storage; lab packing of chemical waste for disposal.

 

MILITARY EXPERIENCE:  November 1987 - July 1994; Commissioned Officer, Lieutenant, U. S. Naval Reserve.  Assigned to Naval Control of Shipping Office 208, Naval Reserve Readiness Center, Atlanta, GA.  Responsible for providing training to 53 enlisted and 25 officers.  Honorable discharge.
