Department of Human Resources Annual Report FY 2001 - 2002
Mission Statement The Human Resources Department is a comprehensive human resources and payroll operation, providing Benefits Administration, Staff Recruitment, Training, Workers Compensation and Payroll Administration services to the West Georgia campus community. Our customers include the Faculty, Staff and Students of West Georgia as well as West Georgia’s retirees. With a staff dedicated to maintaining the integrity of West Georgia’s mission, policies and procedures, we provide quality customer service through personal attention to individual needs. Departmental Statement of Goals and Outcomes
1. Continue to improve the level of customer service to the
campus community through increased communications, cross training and making
information easily accessible. (Applicable to Bread and Butter Goal 6c) Throughout the past
year we have increased communications with our employee population. Our efforts have included educational
sessions for employees relating to benefits and how new tax laws could affect
them as individuals. All members of the
Human Resources staff have been exposed to PeopleSoft HRMS and answer routine
questions. This allows questions to be
answered more efficiently. We have also
revised many of the forms used in Human Resources, making them more “customer
friendly” and have provided access to them through the Human Resources web
site. 2.
Provide benefit
information to all new faculty and staff. (Applicable to Bread and Butter Goal
6c) In August of 2001
the staff provided benefits orientation sessions for 73 new faculty members for
the 2001-2002 academic year. We also
provided orientation sessions for 81 new administrative and support staff personnel
during the fiscal year. 3.
Provide employees
with a wide range of benefits and the
in order to meet their needs.
(Applicable to Bread and Butter Goal 6c) During January 2002
we implemented the AFLAC supplemental insurance program along with two 475(b)
plans in order to widen the range of insurance coverage and tax benefit
programs available to the campus community.
Utilization of the EAP program continues to increase, 49 individuals
have contacted EAP for assistance with personal issues over the last 12 months. Staff Productivity: Two staff members
have completed the educational requirements and have passed a national exam for
certification as Professional in Human Resources through the Society for Human
Resource Management. Various staff
members attended three conferences of which two were hosted by the USGHRA and
one by the Payroll Users Group. Two staff members
attended PeopleSoft Financials training sessions. General Statement of
Departmental Condition: The Human Resources
department is in adequate condition. We
have experienced a work load increase due to the implementation of PeopleSoft
Financials and the loss of one position in the latest round of budget cuts but
we have tried to compensate by reorganizing to better utilize the skills and
abilities of our current staff. Goals for 2003: The HR department
will implement an applicant tracking system, through PeopleSoft in fiscal year
2003. The will add to the accuracy in
our applicant tracking for Affirmative Action. Revise the
University’s Affirmative Action Plan. Provide educational
sessions to faculty and staff on core HR processes, including form usage,
interview procedures, and lines of communication. Continue to examine
core HR processes for continued improvement. Implement training
programs for sexual harassment, affirmative action, and customer service.
